Johnson worries Chicagoans think street violence is ‘normal’

By Bill Cameron, WLS-AM News

(CHICAGO) Are most Chicagoans REALLY concerned about street violence?  Bill Cameron says even Police Supt Eddie Johnson has his doubts.

Street violence happens so often, Eddie Johnson worries that we all think it’s normal.

“I was out on the West Side one day and I was watching kids play on the playground. Right around the corner from where we were sitting, we heard about four gunshots. Bam, bam, bam, bam!  I see these kids immediately go down on the ground. We go around the corner and we can still see the smoke, but the offenders were gone. So as we go around the block looking for them, we go back past the playground. Those kids that had got down are back up and playing like nothing happened. That’s not normal. It’s not normal for those kids to think that that’s okay.”

But, Johnson say, it’s why we’ve become de-sensitized to street violence.
