(CHICAGO) — Al’s Beef is celebrating its 80th year in business.

Owner Chris Pacelli says the history goes back beyond 80 years.

“The Italian Beef was invented by my grandfather back in 1918 for parties. Then in 1939 my uncle and my father put up the first beef stand which was a front for bookies. Then after a couple of years they got rid of the bookies and just concentrated on the store.”

To celebrate, AL’s is offering a beef for 80 cents on Thursday, October 18, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Back in September, the Chicago City Council passed a resolution honoring the restaurant’s history.
