China To Launch ‘Artificial Moon’ To Light Up The Sky

The Moon we have is pretty good, but China thinks it can do better.

China is reportedly planning to launch an ‘artificial moon’ in the next couple of years, designed to light up the night sky over the country.

The ‘artificial moon’ is a device that uses mirrors to reflect sunlight back to Earth – just like the real Moon does. But this one will shine eight times brighter, and can be focused to light up specific areas. Officials say it could potentially conserve energy by replacing streetlights.

The artificial moon is expected to launch in 2020. If it’s successful, three more could be launched by 2022.
