On Friday, the Saudi Government claimed that missing journalist Jamal Khashoggi was killed after a ‘fistfight’ broke out inside the Saudi embassy in Istanbul. Now President Trump has responded, saying he thinks that explanation is a credible one.
Speaking to reporters ahead of a rally in Arizona, Trump was asked if he found the Saudis’ story credible, responding “I do. I do.” He also called the arrests of 18 people and the dismissal of at least five Saudi officials a “good first step”. Trump called Khashoggi’s death a “horrible event” and “unacceptable”.
Some of Trump’s fellow Republicans disagree. Sen. Lindsey Graham tweeted “To say that I am skeptical of the new Saudi narrative about Mr. Khashoggi is an understatement”.
