Walmart is backing off their support for Mississippi Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith after her controversial remarks about a ‘public hanging’.

Hyde-Smith came under fire for a video where she said of a supporter “If he invited me to a public hanging, I’d be on the front row”. Many felt the comment was racist in light of Mississippi’s dark history of lynchings.

Walmart announced on Twitter than Hyde-Smith’s comments “clearly do not reflect the values of our company and associates” and say they’re asking for all campaign donations to be refunded.

Hyde-Smith is headed for a run-off election against Democratic challenger Mike Espy, who is black.
