Run for the Hills! Giant ‘Nightmare Bee’ Not Extinct After All

Four times the size of an average honeybee, it’s not difficult to understand how the black Giant Bee earned the nickname “the nightmare bee.” The mammoth insect has been thought to be extinct since the mid-1980s.

But now, in a development that’s bound to cause more nightmares, the Giant Bee has been found alive and well in Indonesia — in the same area the bee was discovered back in 1958. Research Clay Bolt, who was part of the team that stumbled upon a nest of Giant Bees, says the discovery was “the most remarkable thing I’d ever laid my eyes on.”

He adds, “Just knowing that this bee’s giant wings go thrumming through this ancient Indonesian forest helps me feel that, in a world of so much loss, hope and wonder still do exist.”
