Facebook Removed 1.5 Million Videos of New Zealand Attacks in First 24 Hours

Facebook officials say that they removed or blocked 1.5 million videos of the New Zealand mosque rampage that left 50 dead and dozens wounded. To put that in perspective only five million people live in New Zealand.

Facebook officials shared on Twitter that the removals and blocks were not only to respect those affected by the attacks but to help with the ongoing investigation. But they’re not catching all of the video’s circulation; one Twitter account with nearly 700 million followers was posting an edited version of the shootings.

Many have condemned sites like Facebook, Twitter and more for not setting guidelines or measures to prevent videos like the attacks to even make it to social media. A UCLA professor told USA Today that the biggest social media platforms haven’t taken these issues to heart.
