A transgender high school student in Georgia was nominated for prom king – but was told by the school to run for prom queen instead.
17-year-old Dex Frier, who has identified as male since his sophomore year, was one of six people nominated for prom king at Johnson High School in Gainesville, Georgia. But the principal told Frier he could run for prom queen or not run at all – and says that directive came straight from the superintendent.
The superintendent said he didn’t want to put the school district “in the middle of a national social, societal and legal issue”. Frier, meanwhile, says there is no clear school rule that prom king candidates must be biologically male.
