Alabama Stops Arresting People on Misdemeanor Weed Charges

In a sign of the changing times, officials in Alabama’s largest county have stopped arresting people on misdemeanor marijuana charges.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday that, effective immediately, deputies will only issue tickets for misdemeanor pot possession.

“People are always talking about criminal justice reform,” spokesman David Agee says, noting the measure will free up jail space and allow deputies to focus on more serious crimes. “Well, this is more than talk. This is action. This is big.”
