Marines Say Another Man From ‘Iwo Jima’ Photo Was Misidentified

The U.S. Marines have corrected a case of mistaken identity in one of the most famous photographs ever taken – the U.S. flag being raised over Iwo Jima.

The Marine Corps says one of the soldiers in the photo, the second man from the right, has been misidentified for the last 74 years. They now identify the man as Cpl. Harold P. Keller, rather than Pfc. Rene A. Gagnon as previously thought.

A similar announcement was made in 2016 when researchers determined that John Bradley, who inspired the Clint Eastwood movie Flags Of Our Fathers , was not actually one of the soldiers in the photo.
