South Side pastors push for school funding reform

(CHICAGO) A group of South Side pastors plan to address churchgoers this Sunday to ask them to write, email, and call their state reps and senators over what they call an unequal school funding package. They say the one proposed by Gov. Bruce Rauner sends more state money to wealthier, suburban districts, despite a smaller student-age population.

The Reverend Walter Turner told reporters on Thursday the pastors aren’t placing blame on anyone, but simply want to find an equitable solution.

Earlier this month, Democratic State Senator Andy Manar of Decatur said he planned to file legislation that would change the state’s funding system to send more resources to high-need, high-poverty districts.
