Johnson: City ramping up police protection if Van Dyke verdict is not guilty

By Bill Cameron, WLS-AM News

(CHICAGO)   As the Van Dyke trial continues, Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson is talking about ramping up police protection if the verdict is not guilty.

Eddie Johnson starts off hoping a not guilty would not trigger violence, noting “Chicago’s home to all of us and what I”m getting from community activists, community leaders as well as the families is if people have a difference of opinion, and they protest, we expect it to be peaceful.”

But then he deals with what’s likely if it’s a not guilty, he adds “We are prepared to ramp-up deployment if the need arises. Now I don’t think we need to do that, but days off being canceled is one of them. Going to 12-hour shifts is one of them.”

And he said he always refuses to let cost get in the way of public safety.
