Americans More Likely to Die From Opioid Overdose Than Vehicle Crash

In America, it is now more likely for someone to die from an opioid overdose than in a vehicle crash.

There is a 1 in 96 chance that someone will die as a result of an overdose and a 1 in 103 chance of dying in a vehicle crash.

“The nation’s opioid crisis is fueling the Council’s grim probabilities, and that crisis is worsening with an influx of illicit fentanyl,” the National Safety Council said in a statement.

Solutions for this crisis include better training for those that prescribe opioids, increasing the availability of naloxone and providing more treatment options for addiction.

“It is impacting our workforce, it is impacting our fathers and mothers who are still raising their children,” said Ken Kolosh of the National Safety Council.
