New Law Puts Washington Kids in Booster Seats Until Middle School

As if middle school students aren’t already embarrassed enough to be seen with their parents, pre-teens in Washington are soon going to have to deal with a whole new level of humiliation when they’re dropped off at school in booster seats.

In accordance with a new state law, all children who are shorter than 4’9″ are required to sit in a car booster seat. Generally, children reach that height when they’re between 10 and 12 years old. The new law also requires children under 2 years old to use rear-facing car seats, while children between 2 and 4 have to sit in forward-facing models. If a child isn’t using the correct car seat, the driver of the vehicle can be ticketed.

The new requirements go into effect on January 1st, 2020.
