Rural Kansas Country Sends People To Jail Over Unpaid Medical Bills

If you can’t afford your medical bills and live in Coffeyville, Kansas, you might want to scrape together what money you do have and move.

Thanks to a law on the books, Montgomery County can throw a person in jail for unpaid medical debt.

Officially, the indebted person must appear in court every three months to state that he or she is too poor to pay the “debtors exam.” If the hearing is missed twice, an arrest warrant is issued.

According to CBS News , the poverty rate in the town is twice the national average.
