Georgia Governor Faces Backlash After Reopening State Beaches Amid COVID-19 Pandemic

Georgia governor Brian Kemp is drawing criticism after he issued stay-at-home orders which included reopening beaches so people can exercise. Tybee Island is at the center of the controversy. The tourist spot was closed two weeks ago and is now reopening and Mayor Shirley Sessions is calling the action a “reckless mandate.”

“As the Pentagon ordered 100,000 body bags to store the corpses of Americans killed by the coronavirus, Governor Brian Kemp dictated that Georgia beaches must reopen, and declared any decision makers who refused to follow these orders would face prison and/or fines,” said Sessions.

While Sessions isn’t supporting the governor’s decision due to the lack of beach staff and emergency medical services, she plans on taking legal action against the governor’s mandate.

Kemp was previously criticized for not issuing a shelter-in-place order as well as his explanation as to why he decided to tighten restrictions. The Georgia governor says he just found out ” that this virus is now transmitting before people see signs,” a message health officials had been warning about since January.
