Navy Hospital Ship Departs New York City

After a month docked in the Hudson River, the USNS Comfort has departed New York City.

The Navy ship was brought to the Big Apple to relieve the pressure on the hospital system, handling non-coronavirus related medical issues as the city became the epicenter of the outbreak in the US.

Having treated 182 patients, the final of which was discharged last Saturday, Governor Andrew Cuomo said the ship could return to its home port in Norfolk, Virginia.

“While the ship is departing New York City, make no mistake, the fight is not over, and we stand ready to support the response to COVID-19 in whatever capacity we are needed,” noted Vice Adm. Andrew Lewis, commander of U.S. 2nd Fleet and Maritime Component Element-East.
