Zoom calls are being used for everything nowadays. From work to connecting with loved ones, Zoom has been the central place where big decisions are being made and birthdays are being celebrated. But what about handing down death sentences?

Due to the Coronavirus, Singapore is now using the popular platform to hand down sentencing in an effort to keep social distancing during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Punithan Genasan, a 37-year-old Malaysian man was sentenced to death for his involvement in a drug deal. Genasan’s hearing was held over Zoom and local organizations are calling the move, “inhumane.”

Genasan was convicted of trafficking at least 28.5g of heroin, an offense that is punishable with the death penalty in Singapore. The country is one of four that still use the death penalty in drug offense cases.
