New Leaders Get To Work In Springfield

(Springfield, IL) — With the 103rd General Assembly being sworn in Wednesday, it’s time for them to roll up their sleeves and get to work. Leadership includes House Speaker Chris Welch (D-Hillside), State Sen. President Don Harmon (D-Oak Park), Senate Minority leader John Curran (R-Downers Grove) and House Minority Leader Tony McCombie (R-Savanna), who makes history by being the first female to hold that title.

McCombie telling the Steve Cochran Show on WLS AM 890 that first on the agenda is sorting out rules of the chamber and the leader says she has submitted about a dozen.

“I sat down with the Speaker this week to go over those and hopefully the first order of business for bipartisanship is that he takes a few of our suggestions,” McCombie said. “Do I think we’re going to get them all? No. But some of them include consent calendar, the Covid restrictions, remote voting. Those are the things that certainly we should have a bipartisan agreement on.”

Other changes sought would allow bills to be discussed in committee if there are an equal amount of Democrat and Republican sponsors.
