Social Media Concerns – Chicago Violence

(CHICAGO) — Expect one state lawmaker to address social media and the impact it has when it comes to large mob gatherings in Chicago.

State Rep. Kam Buckner (D-Chicago) tells the Steve Cochran show on WLS that he will be asking questions about what the state can do to quell the violence in Chicago, some of which is coordinated on social media platforms by teenagers.

“We’ve got to figure this thing out because the truth of the matter is they are using these platforms to organize and agitate,” Buckner said. “The truth of the matter also is that the Chicago Police Department seems to be outwitted by 15-year-olds.”

This comes as some states, like Utah, have moved to ban youth from some social media sites and apps.

“Young people being downtown…is not a crime,” Buckner said. “It’s when the other things happen. So we do have to call the social media platforms to task for whatever their role is in this as well.

Buckner is hopeful something can be done before the legislative session wraps up for the summer.
