Springfield: Budget Talks Continue

(CHICAGO) — Lawmakers in Springfield continue to focus on a state budget as the end of the spring legislative session draws to a close.

One of the sticking points is a plan to provide healthcare coverage for migrants. State Rep. Kam Buckner tells The Steve Cochran Show on WLS-AM 890 that the federal government must step up.

“The federal government has to find a plan on how to move forward, not just on the healthcare piece for folks that have come here to seek asylum, but for all of this,” Buckner said. “The fact of the matter is that it takes too long to get a work visa in this country…”

Buckner says he and other colleagues have reached out to federal lawmakers.

Some lawmakers have argued that the state does not have the funds and ballooning enrollments will ultimately lead to a loss of services for the most vulnerable in the state.

The FY 2024 budget begins July 1.
