Chicago Alderman could soon be banned from moonlighting

40th ward Alderman Andre Vasquez proposing an ordinance that would bar city council members from holding second jobs. The measure says the job as alderperson is a full time job but it allows for attorneys to perform pro-bono work and aldermen who are also landlords to own as many as five properties. Aldermanic salaries range from over $115,000 to over $142, 000. Opponents argue their other jobs help them in their job as a city council member. If approved the ordinance would take effect next May.
