(CHICAGO) — Mayor Brandon Johnson on Sunday announced his choice for Chicago’s next police superintendent, tapping Englewood native Larry Snelling.
The announcement comes after a months-long search. Johnson is set to formally introduce his pick later Monday morning.
In a statement Sunday, Johnson said in part, “today, a new chapter begins in our journey to create a better, stronger and safer Chicago.”
Snelling has served as the chief of Chicago Police Department’s Bureau of Counterterrorism since 2022. He started his career with CPD in 1992.
A graduate of Englewood High School, Snelling has a bachelor’s degree in adult education from DePaul University.
Snelling still must receive approval by the city council.
