Texas Governor Greg Abbott isn’t waiting for a strike to give his state’s teachers a raise.
On Thursday, Abbott announced that he would approve $1.6 billion for teacher pay raises in a new spending bill.
According to the National Education Association, teacher salaries in Texas run about $7,000 below the national average. Under the new spending bill, teachers with five years’ experience would be eligible for a $4,000 raise.
