(SKOKIE) The CTA Yellow Line will remain closed for several weeks as crews continue to repair a portion of the track damaged when an embankment eroded away.

Over the next two weeks, crews will be measuring the stability of the site, and moving construction materials into place, Metropolitan Water Reclamation District spokeswoman Allison Fore said Friday.

After that, crews will have a timeline for final repairs, which will likely take several more weeks, Fore said.

The ground gave away Sunday during a construction project near McCormick Boulevard in Skokie, the CTA said. The tracks were no longer stable, halting the train line that serves about 2,900 people per day between Chicago and the northern suburb.

The MWRD, its contractor and the CTA are working together to restore service, Fore said.

“It is important to all parties to proceed in a safe and determined manner that will produce a reliable, safe service as quickly as possible. In order to achieve this, many actions are moving forward in a parallel path,” Fore said in a statement.

This week, crews have removed the tracks and worked to stabilize the area so ComEd can remove damaged electrical poles from the site, Fore said. Preliminary engineering designs are also being drafted.

Until the Yellow Line reopens, passengers can take shuttle buses through the affected area, or use the No. 97 Skokie bus as an alternative, the CTA said.

A portion of McCormick Boulevard is also closed between Oakton and Howard streets until further notice, a statement from the Village of Skokie said.
