City deploys salt spreaders as forecasters warn of freezing rain

(CHICAGO) The Department of Streets and Sanitation has deployed 210 trucks to salt the city’s main streets and Lake Shore Drive early Thursday as forecasters warn of freezing rain across the Chicago area.

Authorities are hoping to prevent icy conditions for the morning rush while the National Weather Service put a freezing rain advisory into effect until 9 a.m. Thursday.

Freezing rain or drizzle could cause ice accumulations of up to a tenth to an inch in Cook, Lake, McHenry, DuPage, Kane and DeKalb counties, among others, the advisory said. Motorists were urged to be prepared for slippery roads and slow down, using caution while driving.

The city’s salt spreaders would first focus on salting arterial routes, then move to neighborhood streets, if necessary.

Thursday is expected to be mostly cloudy, with a 60 precent chance of rain and a high of 31 degrees, according to the weather service. There is a chance of snow between 9 a.m. and noon, but less than half an inch of snowfall was expected.

Bitter cold temps to continue through Monday in Chicago

(CHICAGO) As Chicago creeps toward minus 13 degrees early Monday, some people will be rooting for a record: Come on, mercury! Drop!

“Some people would say if you’re going to get this cold, you might as well set a record doing it,” National Weather Service Meteorologist Gino Izzo said Sunday night.

“Minus 14 is Chicago’s record for December 19. It was set back in 1983. We’ll probably fall just a hair short of that,” Izzo said.

Expect wind chills between minus 15 and minus 30 early Monday.

“Some people are having fun with the cold by throwing hot water into the air and watching it vaporize before hitting the ground,” Izzo said.

Temperatures should rise into the single digits Monday afternoon and continue to rise into more seasonable norms throughout the week, with highs in the 30s and lows in the teens.

CPS classes in session Thursday despite frigid temperatures

(CHICAGO) Chicago Public Schools students will have to brave Thursday’s bitterly cold temperatures.

Classes will be in session with a wind chill advisory in effect until 10 a.m. Thursday as temperatures barely get out of the single digits, and plunge as low as minus 30 degrees with the wind chill factor, according to the school district and the National Weather Service.

“Our highest priority is the safety of students and staff, and we are closely monitoring the weather to help ensure that holding class is in the best interest of students,” CPS spokesman Michael Passman said in an email Wednesday night, adding that “multiple CPS departments are working to ensure schools are prepared for a safe and successful school day.”

Buses will be started early to warm them up for students, and school engineers will arrive “first thing” to make sure heating systems are running properly, officials said.

Forecasters urge people to dress in layers, cover exposed skin and limit time outdoors. Frostbite can take effect in less than half an hour.

Chicago to see temperatures in single digits this week

(CHICAGO) This week, cold winds will blow across the Chicago area, which will see temperatures drop to the single digits and more snow.

A low of 7 degrees was forecast for Tuesday night, with the wind chill making it feel as cold as minus 8, according to the National Weather Service. A breezy, western wind with gusts as high as 35 mph was expected overnight.

The weather service said Wednesday will see a high of 18 and a low of 5 on Wednesday night. Temperatures were expected to plunge on Thursday with a high of 8 degrees and wind chill values as low as minus 12.

Snow is possible later in the week. A 20 percent chance of snow was forecast for Thursday night. That chance could increase to 50 percent on Friday, with snow before 4 a.m. and snow and sleet likely later in the day.

Friday is likely to see temperatures in the 20s. Those temperatures were expected to drop again over the weekend, according to the weather service.

WEATHER – Scattered snow flurries and snow showers possible this morning. Becoming sunny later.
