Lake Shore Drive Delays Ahead

A new construction project is getting underway on Chicago’s North Side that will make getting around on Lake Shore Drive a real challenge.

Crews worked Tuesday measuring, marking, and setting up cones on LaSalle Drive near Lake Shore. Eventually, LaSalle will be down to one lane in each direction from North Avenue to the drive.

This advance work is just a part of the big picture: a resurfacing and bridge repair project on Lake Shore Drive from North Avenue to Monroe. On Monday, Aug. 27, crews will have the drive reduced to only two lanes in each direction from North to Monroe until Oct. 6.

The Chicago Department of Transportation is strongly urging drivers to use public transportation during the six-week project.
The repairs and resurfacing will be done in two stages. During the first phase, the two left lanes of Lake Shore will be closed in both directions from North to Monroe. The second phase would shift traffic and close the right lanes.

While CDOT admits this will be a major inconvenience, they also stress that the work is badly needed, both the resurfacing on the drive between Grand Avenue and Monroe and the bridge work at North. In order to get the repair work done as quickly and safely as possible, crews will work double shifts with around the clock closures.

CTA construction to cause lane closure on Dan Ryan

(CHICAGO) Starting this week, one inbound lane will close on the Dan Ryan Expressway for several months to make way for construction on the CTA Red Line’s 95th/Dan Ryan train station and bus terminal.

Construction for the CTA’s 95th Street Terminal Improvement Project requires an extended closure of the left inbound lane where I-57 merges into the Dan Ryan, just north of 95th Street, according to a statement from the CTA. The lane closure will begin Saturday, weather permitting, and last until fall 2017.

The closure, which was also in effect in fall 2016, could cause delays in the area, the transit agency said. Traffic monitoring devices and changeable message signs will be installed along northbound I-57 and Illinois State Police will be adding extra patrols in the area, to enforce work zone speed limits, among other things. Drivers are urged to allow extra time for trips in the area and pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones.

Workers will be completing construction on the new facility’s foundations, and working on what will be two CTA terminal buildings – one north and one south of 95th Street – that will replace the transit agency’s existing 95th Street bus and rail facility, the CTA said.

The Adams Street entrance to Union Station will remain open during construction, CDOT said. The sidewalks are expected to re-open by Dec. 10. The entire project is expected to be completed by January.

Another Weekend of Closures for Byrne Flyover

By Jen DeSalvo, WLS-AM 890 News and Traffic

(CHICAGO) Just because it is winter in Chicago, that doesn’t mean that Kennedy, Eisenhower and Dan Ryan commuters are getting a break from construction work on the Jane Byrne (Circle) Interchange.

In a news release from the Illinois Department of Transportation, the organization announced that the ramp from the inbound Kennedy Expressway (EB I-90/94) to the outbound Eisenhower Expressway (WB I-290) will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, to 4 a.m. Monday, Jan. 18, weather permitting.

This closure is part of the ongoing Jane Byrne Interchange Project, which began in September 2013, and is planned to be completed in Summer 2018.

The closure is necessary for construction of the pier needed for the new flyover ramp linking the inbound Dan Ryan Expressway (WB I-90/94) to the outbound Eisenhower Expressway (WB I-290).

There will be a posted detour directing motorists to the 18th street exit, where they will cross over the bridge to return to the Dan Ryan, only in the inbound direction. From there, they can access the outbound Eisenhower on the ramp which was previously under construction this past fall.

Work will continue throughout the winter months, as long as the weather cooperates with the planned roadwork. Heavy snow, ice and extreme cold temperatures are factors which have halted construction in the past.

(CHICAGO) This is the final weekend of closures on Chicago expressways as reconstruction of the Jane Byrne Circle Interchange picks up again today.

The outbound Eisenhower at the interchange will close at 10 this evening. Traffic can still access the I-90/94 ramps, but a detour will direct traffic to the outbound Dan Ryan and the 18th Street interchange to access the outbound Eisenhower via the inbound Ryan.

The inbound Kennedy between Ohio and Harrison will be reduced to one lane at 8 p.m. Saturday, but unlike the last three weekends, no full stops will be required. All inbound Kennedy lanes should be reopened by 10 a.m. Sunday. All lanes on all expressways will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday.

Here Nick Gale’s report for WLS News radio here:

The closures are necessary so steel beams can be installed to support the deck of the new flyover bridge linking the inbound Ryan to the outbound Eisenhower.

This is forth and final weekend of closures.

Traffic on Route 83 between the Cal-Sag Channel and U.S. Route 45 may be reduced to one lane with flaggers at different locations until July 15, IDOT said.

The work will occur in Lemont, unincorporated Lemont and Palos Township, IDOT said.

Drivers should allow extra time for travel.

Roadwork to reduce North Aurora Road to one lane in Naperville

(NAPERVILLE) Roadwork in west suburban Naperville will require a major traffic pattern shift on North Aurora Road starting Thursday and lasting through September.

A new traffic pattern will be installed on North Aurora Road, reducing it to a single lane in each direction near Illinois Route 59, according to a statement from the Illinois Department of Transportation. Both eastbound and westbound traffic will have a dedicated left turn lane at Route 59.

The traffic shift is part of an ongoing road reconstruction project along Route 59 intended to increase the road’s capacity, reduce the potential for crashes and relieve traffic congestion, according to IDOT.

Drivers are advised to allow extra travel time for the duration of the project, which should be finished by the end of September.

Construction on Route 21 in Niles, Glenview to last until August

Construction begins for bridge on Illinois Route 72 near I-90

(GILBERTS) Work on the Illinois Route 72 Bridge carrying traffic over the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway in Gilberts is scheduled to begin Monday to prepare for removal and reconstruction as part of the I-90 Rebuilding and Widening Project.

The Higgins Road Bridge will remain open, the Illinois Department of Transportation said. However, the bridge will be reduced to one lane over I-90 with traffic in both directions controlled by traffic signals during construction.

About 16,000 vehicles use this bridge daily, IDOT said.

Because the Higgins Road Bridge is a two-lane bridge, only one lane will be available to traffic during construction. Traffic signals will be used to control access for eastbound and westbound traffic using the single open lane in order to keep the bridge open during construction, IDOT said.

The temporary traffic signals are scheduled to be in place by late May, and construction will start on the westbound side of the bridge with all traffic traveling on the eastbound side of the bridge. The westbound side of the bridge is scheduled to reopen by late summer, and work will begin on the eastbound side of the bridge.

The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2015.

Intermittent full closures – which will last no longer than 15 minutes each – will begin after 10 p.m. to allow for the removal of bridge beams, IDOT said. All lanes are expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Thursday ahead of the morning commute.

Similar closures are scheduled to begin on Touhy Avenue in Rosemont and Higgins Road in Des Plaines the week of April 13, according to IDOT. The daily overnight closures will be in effect throughout the week in addition to daytime lane closures from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
